Mary Ann Newton, of Winterset, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2022, with her sister by her side. She was 73 years old. At this time, no services are planned. Mary Ann’s wishes were to have her body donated to Des Moines University for medical research. Memorials may be directed to the family for a future designation. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.caldwellparrish.com. Mary Ann was a caring soul. She was a loyal Cubbies and Broncos sports fan who enjoyed organizing sales, family and other social events. She enjoyed nature and countryside car rides. Every spring, she was delighted to see all the baby calves and ducklings. She was an avid follower of the Decorah Bald Eagle nest and eaglet family. For good luck she would stamp her thumb upon seeing the first spring robin (it’s an Iowa thing). Her sister and friends describe her as a dedicated worker, independent, trustworthy, a treasured friend and best doggie mom. She enjoyed a good laugh, loved to tell stories and was fun to be with. Music was very special to her in her good hearing days. She played clarinet in the high school band, piano and organ at First United Methodist Church, and sang in the high school chorus. Back in her Northwestern Bell Telephone days, she went on a European trip, 7 countries in 3 weeks with 30 strangers…some of whom are still friends. Her career also included Pioneer Hybrid, Sysco Foods, Madison County Hospital cafeteria and many other local jobs. She was a member of the Winterset High School class of 1966 and American Legion Auxiliary. She battled Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease for years and was very courageous in her final weeks. She lived a philosophy of faith and wisdom. She is survived by her sister, Donna; many good friends and cousins.
