Mary Patience, 97, of Winterset, passed away Saturday morning, June 23, 2018 at the West Bridge Care & Rehab in Winterset. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, with burial to follow in the Dexter Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 29 at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service by the VFW Auxiliary Post 8142 of Winterset will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday evening. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter or St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northboro. Mary Katherine Walter, daughter of Frederich and Delia (Leibfort) Walter, was born July 10, 1920 at the family farm near Shenandoah, Iowa. She attended the Summit School near the farm and later obtained her GED in 1967. Mary was united in marriage with Herbert Patience on October 31, 1943 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Northboro, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. Mary was primarily a mother and farm wife, but also worked outside the home as a health aide. She helped on the farm for over 49 years. Mary was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aide, the Blue Birds, a 4-H leader, and a volunteer at the Madison County Extension Office. She was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 8142. Mary enjoyed refinishing furniture, chair caning, quilting and sewing clothes. Above all else, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished the time she was able to spend with her family and friends. Mary is survived by her children, Gary (Monica) Patience of Des Moines, Beverly (Danny) White of Waukee, Joyce (Douglas) James of Prescott; eight grandchildren, Denise Greenlees, Holly Nancarrow, Ryan Patience, Stephen Patience, Lewayne White, Joyanna Munsterman, Todd James, and Travis James; 21 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Glen (Marilyn) Patience; sister-in-law, Berneita Patience; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert Patience in 1992; sister, Alvene (Walter) Eitzen; and brother, Robert Walter.
