Maurine “Sue” Schmidt, 88, of Lorimor died Sunday, May 12, 2019 at her home. A memorial gathering with family present will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 17, at Caldwell Parrish Winterset Chapel in Winterset with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date in the Lorimor Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lorimor Lions Club, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Lorimor Church of God. Maurine (Sue) McKinney Nelson Schmidt was born October 20, 1930, in Bannock County, Downey, Idaho; the daughter of Orie Russell McKinney and Faye Allsup McKinney. Sue lived in Idaho until the age of four when the family moved to Iowa. She attended Macksburg Consolidated School and graduated in 1948. Maurine married Boyd H. Nelson, May 26, 1948 in Osceola, Iowa. They were parents of five children. They later divorced. Sue married George R. Schmidt, Jr. November 12, 1978, in Lorimor, Iowa. George preceded her in death in June 2015. Sue worked and owned many businesses. In the early 1960’s, she managed Buckingham’s Grocery Store in Lorimor and later to work for Jim and Deloma Decker in Lorimor. She spent many a day working in Winterset at the North Bud, Corner Tavern and Bonnie’s. In 1980, she opened a bar and restaurant in Lorimor. She sold the bar and bought Granny Sue’s Café On Main Street. In 1993, she bought Three Feather’s Restaurant & Lounge and was there three years. Sue also worked for Watertown Monuments starting in 1977 until her death. Sue served on the Lorimor City Council for 16 years. When the children were younger, she attended the Barney Christian Church and taught Bible School. She served on the board of Innovative Industries. She was a member of the Church of God in Lorimor. She is a member of the Lorimor Lions Club and the American Legion Auxiliary, having been a past 5th District President. Sue is survived by her children, Saundra (Wayne) Tucker of Lorimor, Darrell Nelson of Winterset, Marilyn Nelson of Winterset, Doris (Bobby) Jackson of Lorimor and Norma (David) Decker of Adair; eleven grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren, including Paisley Kay Wicker (Baby Kay, whom has a very special bond with her great-great grandma); sister-in-law, Mary Williamson; nieces and nephews; special friend, Muriel Johnston; and many more relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; stepfather, Percy McKinney; sister, LaDene Brown; brother, Paul McKinney, sister-in-law, Letha Noehren; grandson, Garrett Harrison; and granddaughter, Vicki Decker.
