Maxine Chandlee, 85, of Winterset, Iowa, formerly of Charleston, Illinois died Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at the Winterset Care Center South. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston, Illinois at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the St. Joseph Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri at a later date. Memorials may be directed to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Maxine Parr was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on August 15, 1928, the daughter of William and Henrietta (Fraser) Parr. Maxine graduated from Sacred Heart Convent High School in the class of 1946. Her marriage to Walter F. Chandlee, Jr. took place on April 21, 1947 in St. Joseph and the couple shared 65 years together. Walter preceded her in death on January 12, 2013. Maxine and Walter raised their family in Effingham, Illinois and later moved frequently because of Walter’s career but eventually retired in Charleston, Illinois. Maxine was a devoted wife and mother who raised her family and supported her husband from home for many years. When the children were grown, Maxine worked at the Effingham Unemployment office and in Charleston for the Visiting Nurses Association. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston, Illinois and was also active in the Illinois Federation of Women’s Club, having served as a Junior Director from 1970-1972. She and her husband were also longtime members and supporters of the Effingham Art Guild in Effingham, Illinois. Maxine is survived by her children, Michael Chandlee of Beecher City, Illinois, Lynne Chandlee (Ken Boyd) of Winterset, Iowa, and Mark Chandlee (Andy) of Titusville, Florida. She is also survived by four siblings, Sarah Davis of Sun City, Arizona; Theresa O’Dell (Marvin) of Palm Springs, California; Bill Parr of Amherst, Virginia, and Joe Parr (Linda) of Springfield, Missouri; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; and a sister, Patricia Walker.
