Maxine was born July 27, 1923 in Page County, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Minnie (Meyers) Paxton. She graduated from Lorimor High School in 1940 and then attended the University of Northern Iowa where she received her teaching certificate. She taught eight years in the rural schools and then five years for the Macksburg Consolidated schools. It was during her time in Macksburg that she met her husband, Robert Witt. They were married on October 24, 1952 in Winterset. Maxine continued her teaching career as a substitute teacher for 12 more years in Macksburg and she also served as cook at the Winterset Care Center North for several years. She was preceded in death by her parents. Maxine was a member of the Women’s Relief Corp in Macksburg, the Madison County Republican Women, the Wayside Garden Club, Madison County Historical Society, as well as a 4-H leader for 12 years. Maxine is survived by her husband, Robert Witt of Macksburg; a step-son, Richard (Betty) Witt of Blue Springs, MO; a son, Robert (Mary Lou) Witt, Jr. of Macksburg; five grandchildren (Robert Witt III, Deidre Witt, Adam Witt, Julia (Eric) Green and David (Christine) Witt); four great grandchildren (Jessica, Ellen and Richard Green and Justin Witt); a sister, Pauline Spencer of Winterset; and two brothers, Duane (Caroline) Paxton of Florida and Dillard (Lois) Paxton of Texas. Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday where family will be present to receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. October 5, 2006 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday October 6, 2006 at Macksburg United Methodist Church, Macksburg, Iowa Memorial: Memorial contributions may be directed to the Macksburg United Methodist Church.
