Melvin Lester Jensen was born on March 26, 1919 in Kirkland, Iowa, the son of Peter and Edna (Miller) Jensen. His marriage to Ruby Ahnen took place on December 17, 1939 in Creston and to this union five children were born, Zella, Joyce, Joanne, Betty and Bobby. Melvin was a farmer all of his life and with Ruby by his side they worked the land and raised their children instilling in them a strong work ethic. He was also employed by Solar Air Craft in Des Moines to help subsidize his farming so he could support his family. He also drove a stock truck for several years but his true love was the farm. He and Ruby lived on farms in Madison and Adair County until 1981 when they retired and moved to Winterset. He was a devoted member of the Fairview Church south of Stuart for many years and was involved with many church activities. Melvin would relax by hunting and fishing which he did up until he turned 90. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Zella (Bob) Studer of Ames; Joyce (Paul) Binns of Winterset; Joanne (Dale) Akin of Johnston; Betty (Dennis) Lauer of Winterset; Bobby (Penny) Jensen of Nevada; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Lettie Loper of Council Bluffs and 2 sisters-in-law, Nadine Jensen of Council Bluffs and Maxine Jensen of Winterset.
