Michael M. Klapp P.E., L.S., Fellow ASCE was born October 8, 1936, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Marion Klapp and Naomi Klapp. Michael survived his twin brother Anthony Klapp. Michael attended St. Augustin School, and Dowling High School where he received the Aquinas Key. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. Michael was devoted to his career as a Principal Civil Engineer, Land Surveyor, and to volunteering. Michael accomplished several recognitions pertaining to his profession, and volunteering. He was extremely active in doing what he loved. Therefore there are so many awards and accomplishments he had in his lifetime, they are not all listed: John Dunlap Sherman Woodward Award as outstanding young engineer of the Iowa Engineering Society 1966 President of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society 1970-1971 L.O. Stewart Service Award from the Iowa Chapter, American Public Works Association 1974 Achieved the status of Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers 1980 30 year Service Award from the American Public Works Association 1980 Outstanding Public Service Award from the Central Iowa Chapter of the Iowa Engineering Society 1986 Math Counselor for Math Heartland U.S.A 1986 Designated James E. West Fellow The Boy Scouts of America 2001 John S. Dodd Award Professional Land Surveyor 2002 Recognition and Appreciation for over 44 years of service to the City of Des Moines Survey Department 1959-2003 Strathmores Whos Who for the Demonstrated Leadership and Achievement in their Occupation Industry or Profession 2003-2004 Ground Water Professional Certification 2003-2005 Award for 45 years of Service from the City of Des Moines 2003 Michael was in active volunteering for The Boy Scouts he was an Assistant District Commissioner of the Raccoon Valley District, Post Advisor for Post 36, and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 36. As recognition of his outstanding service to Scouting, Michael was awarded such adult merits as the Scouters Key, the Scouters Award, the Commissioners Key, the Explorers Key, the District Award of Merit (1981), the 30 year Service Pin, the Saint George Award, the Arrow Vigil Honor, and the Wood Badge. Michael designed the Order of the Arrow ceremonial Ring at Mitigwa provided engineering and mapping for both Scout Camps for over 25 years. Michael devoted himself to other volunteer work in addition to Boy Scouting. Usher and a Eucharistic Minister at St. Augustins Catholic Church; serving as Radiological Officer for the Civil Defense Network; and provided free engineering services to Camp Mitigwa, Camp Wapello, and the Catholic Youth Camp at Lake Panorama. He was a Hunter Safety Instructor certifying over a thousand students sponsored by the State Conservation Commission. Michael was Certified Pistol and Rifle Instructor by the National Rifle Association where he taught over four thousand participants sponsored by the Polk County Sheriffs Office. Michael has also served on the Pollution Control Committee of the Izaak Walton League. Michael M. Klapp was a very dedicated public servant. He devoted a lot of his personal time to the instruction and leadership of our youth, the safety of our community, and to practice his faith. Along with all of Michaels accomplishments he was a devoted husband, and father. Michaels survivors include his longtime wife and companion of 50 years, Mary Klapp. He will be missed by his five children, Anthony Klapp, William Klapp, Kathleen Sparks, Katherine Anderson, residing in Des Moines IA., and daughter Christine Shuping, residing in San Diego California. Michael will also be missed by his four grandchildren, Alexis Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Ethan Anderson, residing in Des Moines Ia., and Mitchell Shuping, residing in San Diego California.
