Mike Smith

Michael Edward Smith, 68, of Ankeny, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at his home.

Mike was born on November 6, 1954 to Timothy and Rosemary (Niemeyer) Smith in Anniston,

Alabama. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1973. After high school, Mike

joined the United States Army and served his country until 1979. Following his time in the

military, Mike attended Des Moines Area Community College and graduated in 1980 with a

degree in electronics.

Mike married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Spencer, on June 4, 1977 at Sacred Heart

Catholic Church in West Des Moines. He worked as an Electronic Technician at American Sign

and moved to work for Marel Townsend in 1994. He worked there until his retirement in June of

2019.

Mike always enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping, hunting, hiking, and canoeing. One of

his favorite spots to visit was Yellowstone National Park. Mike was a Scout Master for 10 years

with the local Boy Scout Troop 171 and he enjoyed the adventures that the troop had.

Mike liked to play cards such as cribbage and rummy. He was an excellent woodworker and

DIYer. He took great pride in remodeling and refurbishing his homes. Mike enjoyed hanging out

and camping with his friends. He also cherished the many vacations and time spent with family

and grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife, Cathy; mother, Rosemary; children, Jacob (Kerry) Smith, and

Michaela Smith; sister, Donna (Steve) Asauskas; 3 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Avery, and Kaleb; as

well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Timothy;

and sister, Diana Corbett.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2023 at Caldwell Parrish

Funeral Home with a rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take

place at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic

Church in Ankeny. Burial will follow in the Beaver Catholic Cemetery near Granger.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Wesley Life Hospice.
