Mildred D. Smith, 93, of Van Meter died Monday, August 6, 2012 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 11th at the Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Van Meter. A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 10th at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset; where family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church. Mildred Dorothy Wishmier was born on May 23, 1919 in Madison County to Otto R. and Alice M. (Thomassen) Wishmier. She attended school in Van Meter and graduated from Van Meter High School in 1936. She attended Simpson College where she received her teaching certificate in 1937. Her marriage to Virgil T. Smith took place at the Trinity Lutheran Church on December 10, 1937. Mildred was a dedicated farmwife and mother helping her husband on the farm and attending to the many activities of her large family. She was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she was a long time member of the Ladies Aide and choir. She was also a member of the Sun Shine Garden Club of Winterset and Farm Bureau serving as a county and township president of the Women’s Farm Bureau. Mildred loved playing the piano, gardening, sewing and quilting, having made all of her grandchildren a special quilt but her greatest joy was her family. Mildred is survived by her ten children, JoAnne Wearmouth of Perry; Norman (Marilyn) Smith of Prole; Shirley (Larry) Ham of Winterset; Marilynn (Dan) Van Zee of Winterset; George Smith of Moscow, ID; Betty (Garry) Westling of Ankeny; Gary (Jodine) Smith of Van Meter; Ron (Cindy) Smith of Adel; Dennis Smith of Van Meter and Retta Smith of Van Meter. She is also survived by a sister, Florence Hassl of Minneapolis, MN; 12 grandchildren (Debbie (Jose) Robles; Ryan (Christi) Wearmouth; Marty (Laurie) Smith; Kevin (Jody) Smith; Maria (Ben) Forgy; J.J. Smith; Erick Ham; Mark (Melissa) Ham; Shane Smith; Ted (Sandy) Mapes; Rob (Pam) Clark and Tonya (Mark) Burger) and 20 great grandchildren (Amber, Adrian and Benji Robles; Kaitlyn and Robby Michael Clark; Bryna, Bli, Braylunn and Bladyn Wearmouth; Lexus Burger; Michael Mapes; Heather, Jesse, Blade and Dalton Smith; Sabrina and Xavier Ham and Tyanna, Callie and Dawson Forgy). She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died March 12, 1993; a son-in-law, Russ Wearmouth and a sister, Orma Schafer.
