Mildred Floyd

January 2, 1949 — November 1, 2022

In loving memory.

Mildred Johanna Floyd, a wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter and friend has ended her long battle with many health problems on November 1, 2022 at Mercy West Lakes Hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 73 years old.

A lifelong resident of the Des Moines area, Mildred graduated from North High School in 1967, enjoyed continuing her education and eventually graduated with her Masters of Social Work from the University of Iowa. She married her husband, Steven Floyd, in 1968 and they celebrated 54 years of marriage this last April.

Mildred was a devoted wife and mother, and for most of her adult life was a stay-at-home mom. She loved being a mom and dedicated many years to raising her eight children. Millie had a tenacity about her that transcended in life in many ways, whether it be in her educational studies, her hobbies, in parenthood or as a partner. In her free time Millie liked to cook and recreate recipes, enjoyed crocheting, reading, and keeping up with the news and politics. She was known to be a raging liberal and staunch atheist, for having a strong unwavering moral compass and for advocating for her passions and beliefs in a blunt and consistent manner. She loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, and other extended family. She was a beautiful soul, creative, resourceful, loyal to a fault and she set a standard for work ethic, integrity and dedication.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Steve Floyd; her children; Aaron Floyd (Kelli), Darcia Grace (Mike), Adam Floyd, Angela Ledesma (Tony), Emily Floyd, Sherrie Floyd, Shannon Floyd and Steven Floyd Jr; twenty-three grandchildren (with another on the way) and her sister Mariam Todd. Millie was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Overton-Prell; her father, Roy Overton Sr.; and her siblings; Alvin Overton, Roy Overton Jr, Dolores Fath, and Margaret Overton.

Millie will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by those who loved her, and she will live on forever in our memories.
