Mildred Pauline Fister was born May 12, 1919 at Madrid, Iowa to William Arthur Powell and Hildagard Erickson Powell. She died November 8, 2009 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at age 90 years, 5 months, and 26 days. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, 2009 First Baptist Church, Jefferson, Iowa. The pastor of the church, Pastor Robert McKnight, presided honorary casket bearer Janne Dawson, Donna Foust, Bev Briggs, Dorothy Taylor and Steve McCoy, active casket bearers were Dennis Hendricks, Larry Newton, Ronald Wright, Charles Borst, Les Fister and Nick Schirmbeck, the organist was Mrs. Laura McKnight the congregation sang Amazing Grace and The Old Rugged Cross the burial was at Linwood Cemetery in Boone, Iowa. A lunch was served by the Baptist women at the church after the family returned from Boone. Mid, as she was lovingly known, graduated from Madrid High School in 1936. Mid worked at the Hoisery Mill in Boone after graduation. She married Olin Fister at Boone, Iowa and they lived in Michigan for a time. When Olin went into the service, Mid moved to East Moline where she crossed the river each day to attend Beauty School in Davenport. She started her long career as a beautician where she was a dear friend as well as hair dresser to many. Mid's shops were always called the Beauty Nook. She owned a shop in Webster City before moving to Jefferson in 1952. Mid was very loyal to "her ladies", staying active in her business until she retired in 2007. Mid loved doing for others. Her hobbies of knitting, fine cross stitchery and other crafts were always made to share with family and friends. She was a member of First Baptist Church which she loved, as well as her entire church family. Although Mid had no children of her own, she was a mother influence to her nieces and nephews of which she had ten. Mid was preceded in death by her parents and brother Walter E. Powell. She is survived by and lovingly remembered by her brother Arvid Nelson of Willis, Michigan; sister Alvida Stauch of Tiller, Oregon; nieces, nephews, many great and great-great nieces and nephews who she loved dearly; other relatives and many friends. Memorials may be given in her name and sent to Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson.
