Mona Hammans

May 26, 1929 — November 1, 2019

Mona Irene Simons was born on May 26, 1929 in Carroll, Iowa; she was the fourth daughter born to Charles & Della (Maile) Simons. Mona grew up on her parent’s farm near Lorimor, Iowa and graduated from Lorimor High School in 1947. After working as a telephone operator for two years, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Hammans on February 27, 1949. To this union, three children were born. Mona devoted much of her life to raising their children and to being a farmwife - two of her greatest loves. She was active in her children’s school functions, serving in various leadership roles. Having five sisters, Mona thrived on hosting many large family reunions on the farm. At age 55 and the children on their own, Mona became a licensed aerobics instructor. Never one to be idle, she taught both floor and water aerobics for years prior to opening a fitness salon with a friend in Panora, Iowa. Mona’s faith was a constant in her long life. That faith sustained her throughout the years. As a member of the First Baptist Church in Lorimor, she taught many different ages of youth Sunday School, with high school being her favorite. Mona died on Friday, November 1, 2019 at the former West Bridge Care Center in Winterset, Iowa. She was 90 years old. Left to celebrate her life are her three children: Susan (Bill) Jaggi of St. Peters, MO, Denise (Tim) Tyler of Dallas Center, and David (Kathy) Hammans of Urbandale; eight grandchildren: Joel (Kelly) Tyler, Nick (Monica) Wilson, Nathan (Jessy) Wilson, Alex Wilson, AJ Wilson, Eric Hammans, Evan (Jessica) Hammans, and Jessica (Colby) Wright; five great-grandchildren: Dominic Hammans, Dakota Wilson, Eden Wilson, Elliott Wilson, and Peyton Wright; two sisters, Shirley (Owen) Dudney of Afton and Marian Janss of Winterset; and a host of extended family and friends. Mona was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband; her step-mother; a grandson; two infant brothers; three sisters; and two step-brothers. A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel, where family will greet friends one hour prior, 10 to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mona's name to the Lorimor Community Center (503 Main St., Lorimor, IA 50149) and/or EveryStep Hospice (715 W. McLane St. Suite 100, Osceola, IA 50213).
