Mr David Lloyd Calderwood

David Lloyd Calderwood, known to many as Lloyd, was born on a farm near Denison, Iowa, on (Our web page would not take correct Death Date - November 3, 2012) September 10, 1920 the third of five children born to Seth W. and Hattie M. (Macumber) Calderwood. He graduated from Arcadia High School, Arcadia, Iowa in the Class of 1938. In July of that year, he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was sent to a CCC camp at Clarion, Iowa. Lloyd was selected to attend the U. S. Maritime Service Merchant Marine Radio Operator's School at Gallups Island in Boston Harbor and graduated in 1941. From 1942 through 1945, he served as radio operator for the S.S. Marymar, and later the S.S. Cape Comfort, visiting numerous countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. He attended Iowa State College, now Iowa State University, from 1946 through 1952, graduating with a bachelor's and master's in Agricultural Engineering. In 1955 he began his career with the United States Department of Agriculture, at College Station, Texas, preforming research on conditioning and storage of agricultural products principally rough rice. In 1962, he transferred to the Agricultural Research and Extension Center for Texas A & M University at Beaumont, Texas, and lived in Beaumont for the next fifty years. He retired in June 1984, and continued to travel throughout the world. During his long lifetime, Lloyd was an avid golfer, reader, photographer, game player and ham radio operator, among other pursuits. He was a member of numerous organizations, including the Gallups Island Radio Operators Association, National Association of Agricultural and Biological Engineers; the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE); and the Iowa State University Alumni Association. He was devoted to his family, to whom he was always special. After his move to Texas, he drove from his home in Beaumont twice each year, including his final year, to visit family members throughout Iowa, who happily awaited his safe arrival. Lloyd is survived by his two sisters, Dorothy Zednichek of Marshalltown, Iowa and Bethyl Plendl of Hinton, Iowa, as well as fifteen nieces and nephews; twenty- one great nieces and nephews; and nineteen great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two siblings and their spouses Wayne (Bonnie) Calderwood of Ames and Ada (Robert) Phillips of Perry: brother- in-law Robert Zednichek and Robert Plendl of Hinton; a niece and a great-great nephew. Interment will be held on Saturday morning, May 25 at 11: 00 a.m. in the Calderwood family plot at Westside Cemetery, Westside, Iowa.
