A celebration of life service for Marvel Benedict was held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Pastor Charlene Wolfe of the United Methodist Church in Bagley provided words of comfort. Honorary bearers were all Marvel's friends. Recorded music chosen: Cowgirls Don't Cry, Sick & Tired, Peace in The Valley, and Hurt by Johnny Cash. Following the service was a luncheon in the Hastings Funeral Home lounge. Interment took place at Highland Township Cemetery in Bayard, Iowa. Marvel Lou Benedict was born August 25, 1956 in Des Moines Iowa to Opal June Baldy and John Emmo Blackford and died September 4, 2013 at her home in Bagley. Marvel grew up in Martensdale, Iowa and graduated from Martensdale St. Mary's in 1974. She worked in restaurants as a waitress and married Michael Dudney. Amy Lou was born to the couple and they made their home in Redfield. On November 27, 1979 Marvel married Douglas Benedict and the couple lived in Bagley. Doug adopted Amy Lou and then the couple had their other daughter Nancy on December 30, 1980. Marvel worked at Meadow Gold, for the City of Bagley, the Vaux General Store in Bayard and then she and Doug purchased the Rockin Horse Lounge in Perry. Marvel enjoyed camping and fishing along with crocheting. Marvel was preceded in death by her parents and husband Doug. She is survived by daughters Amy Jabaay (Joe) of Ames and Nancy Hurley of Perry; two grandsons, James Ross and Devin Ross; three grand-daughters, Cheyanne, Cadence and Chloe Hurley; brothers John Blackford Jr. (Gayla) of Florida and Rock Blackford (Tana) of New Virginia, Iowa; ten brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Sylvia Wright of Bloomington, MN; Lorral Rinner (Ronald) of Yale, IA; Ronald Benedict (Crystal) of Panora, IA; Harold Benedict of Milton Free Water, OR; Kathryn Hupp of Panora, IA: Esther Sommars of Des Moines, IA; Cynthia Norton (Randy) of Milton Free Water, OR; Michael Benedict (Tammy) of Bagley, IA; Barbara Carstens (Dean) of Edwardville, IL and Deborah Ruggless (Stacey) of Mitchellville, IA. aunts and uncles and many friends. www.hastingsfh.com
