Funeral services for Phyllis Louise Gilliland were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Hastings Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa. Chaplain David Morfitt of the Perry Lutheran Home provided words of comfort. Casket bearers were: Chuck Gilliland, Blake Elsberry, Michael Spinks, Craig Elsberry, David Bills and Brandon Elsberry. Virginia White was the Pianist and Music played was How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross, On Eagle's Wings and It Is No Secret What God Can Do. Interment took place at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa. Phyllis Louise Gilliland, daughter of Velma Bailey and Charles Swihart, was born on June 5, 1924 in Dallas County, Iowa and died November 28, 2013 at the Perry Lutheran Home at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 23 days. Phyllis received her education at the Washington Township School. On October 17, 1947, Phyllis was married to Harry Gilliland. They were the parents of three children; Ronald, Shirley and Susan. The couple lived in Perry from 1947 until 1968 and then moved to Rippey. They returned to Perry after twenty years in 1988 where they lived until Harry died in 1993. Phyllis then lived alone until moving into the Perry Lutheran Home. Phyllis was a loyal homemaker. She also worked for the Dallas County Hospital as a housekeeper and was a volunteer at the Perry Lutheran Home for many years. Phyllis crocheted afghans and enjoyed being with and visiting with people. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents Velma and Charles; her loving husband Harry; her son-in-law Chad Bills and brother Charles. Phyllis is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her son Ronald Gilliland (Carol) of Bouton; daughters Shirley Bills of Boone and Susan Klassen of Arnolds Park; eight grandchildren: Shirley Glover of Boone, Dave Bills (Vickie) of Dayton, Jeff Bills (Carol) of Boone, Pat Elsberry (Craig) of Boone, Leah Jean McWilliams (James) of Des Moines, Chuck Gilliland of Perry, Ronald Gilliland, Jr. (Keela) of Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Spinks (Mindy) of Mt Lake, Minnesota; 18 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Vivian Swihart of Anaconda, Montana; other relatives and many friends.
