Myrtle Bomar, 73, of Van Meter, died April 19, 2017, due to complications from Pneumonia at the Mercy Medical Center - West Lakes in West Des Moines. A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Ochiltree Funeral Service. A prayer service will begin at 5:00 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Madison County. Memorials may be directed to the Van Meter Public Library or the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines. Online condolences can be left at ochiltree.com. Myrtle Janice Bomar, daughter of Cleavie and Rebecca (Ford) Flanery, was born on October 28, 1943, in Firebrick, Kentucky. She attended schools in the Firebrick area and graduated from Lewis County High School in 1961. She later continued her education at AIB in Iowa obtaining an Accounting Degree. Myrtle was united in marriage with Fred Bomar on November 25, 1966, at the Early Chapel Christian Church in Earlham. Myrtle worked for a shoe manufacturer in Kentucky before moving to Iowa to work for the IRS. She later worked for Look magazine and finished her working career in customer service at the Amoco Motor Club. Myrtle was previously on the Van Meter Public Library Board of Trustees and was a Girl Scouts Troop Leader. She was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening, bird watching and playing cards with Bridge and Cribbage being her favorites. Myrtle was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend who cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Myrtle is survived by two daughters, Natalie Bomar of Van Meter; Rachel (Alan) Backstrom of Van Meter; two grandchildren, Emma and Nicholas Backstrom; sister, Kathleen (Bob) Kisinger of Firebrick, KY; brothers, Eddie Flanery of McDermott, OH; Kenneth (Theresa) Flanery of Dayton, OR; Steve Flanery of Firebrick, KY; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleavie and Rebecca Flanery; husband, Fred Bomar in 2012; sister, Evelyn Peterman; brother, Cleavie Flanery, Jr.
