Norman L. Barker

Norman L. Barker was born July 27, 1918 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Leon LeRoy and Ethel Viola (Adams) Barker. After schooling he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Norman married Wilma Thurman on June 29, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together with their family they resided in Union County until 1954 when they moved to Winterset. He is survived by his children, Phyllis Morrissey (Larry) of Carmel, IN, Gary Barker (Patricia) of Hartsville, SC and Patti Boggess (Richard) of Newton; 20 grandchildren, Terry Bell, Linda Morrissey, Jonathan Morrissey, Amy (Boggess) Barlage, Jacquie Boggess, John Barker, Kelly Galloway, Janette Oyer, Michael Smith, Marie Hatchell, Sereata Luckey, Eric Barker, Shalonda Barker, Christina Barker, Christopher Barker, Cheyenne Barker, Zachary Barker, Amanda Barker, Jacqueline Barker and Christian Barker; and 12 great grandchildren. Norman was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred; parents, Leon and Ethel Barker; wife, Wilma; and great grandson, Cory Bell. Norman was a self-employed businessman in Lorimor and Winterset. After retirement, he and Wilma moved to South Carolina. Norman was a member of the Masons and enjoyed woodworking, reading and gardening. Norman died Friday, May 9, 2008, in Hartsville. He was 89. Visitation: 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa. Service: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa. Memorial: Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lorimor Baptist Church and the Salvation Army.
