Norman Toppin of Winterset, Iowa, died Saturday, February 24, 2018. He was 74 years old. A memorial gathering will be held from Noon to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, March 4, at the Lorimor Community Building in Lorimor. Memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and on-line condolences may be made to the family at www.ochiltree.com. Norman Lee Toppin was born February 5, 1944, in Mason City, the son of Paul and Marjorie (Clark) Toppin. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1962 and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His marriage to Sharon Mulder took place March 25 1965, and to this union two children were born, Jeff and Jodi. Later he married Carol Van Gundy on April 24, 1993, in Des Moines. During his working years he was employed by the City of West Des Moines Public Works and he owned the South Side Garage and Hardware in Lorimor. Norman was an Elvis Presley fan and a member of Elvis impersonator, Eddy Miles’ Fan Club. He enjoyed spending time woodworking and enjoyed making things for others. He is survived by his son, Jeff Toppin (Cindy Anstey) of Winterset; four stepsons, Lee (Brenda) Van Gundy of Colorado Springs, CO, Joe (Rachel) Van Gundy of Lake City, Ray Van Gundy of Lake City, Jimmy (Amy) Van Gundy of Carlisle, brother, Duane (Cheryll) Toppin of Ankeny; sister-in-law, GayLee Toppin of Lorimor; many grandchildren, great grandchildren; extended family and friends. Norman was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Carol Toppin, daughter, Jodi Parker, brother, Gerald Toppin and sister and brother-in-law, Myrna (Dexter) Stalkfleet.
