He attended country schools, and enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. In the army, he served in the 264th Anti-Tank Company, 66th Infantry Division of the “Black Panthers”. Following the war, Nyle returned to Iowa where he married Shirley Mae Root on February 14, 1948 in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Jeannine, Lee Alan, Karen, and Niki. After tenant farming near Belmond, Iowa, he moved his family to a farm near Patterson, Iowa, where he farmed for over 50 years. Nyle and Shirley loved to ballroom dance, traveling throughout Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri. Nyle’s passion was farming. He enjoyed John Deere tractors. “If it wasn’t green, it wasn’t mean”.
