A service for Opal Irene Olson was held 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2015 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Steve Ransom of the United Methodist Church in Grand Junction, Iowa provided words of comfort. Marjorie Vannatta was the musician. Hymns selected were The Old Rugged Cross and Amazing Grace. Interment took place at Junction Township Cemetery in Grand Junction, Iowa. Following the service at the cemetery was a luncheon in the Hastings Funeral Home Lounge. Opal Irene Olson was born on March 31, 1929 in Scranton, Iowa to Clyde and Elizabeth Morlan. She grew up and went to school at the Kendrick 6, country school where she graduated from the 8th grade. After her schooling she worked at various jobs. She was married on June 4, 1947 in Jefferson to Legore Cummings and they made their home in Jefferson. Opal worked at Green County Hospital for several years in the dietary department. She took a job with American Athletic where she belonged to Local 1540 and worked and raised their family. After a divorce Opal continued working at American Athletics until he she retired in 1985 and moved to Grand Junction. She was married to Alfred Olson in1973 and they made their home in Grand Junction. Mr. Olson passed away in 1993 and in 1998 she moved to Buffalo, Wyoming to be close to family. She became a resident of Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo where she lived until her death. Opal was a past member of the VFW Auxiliary and served as president of Union Local 1540 in Jefferson, Iowa for eight years. She was an avid fisherman and enjoyed ceramics, quilting and spending time with her family. She loved to play the piano and volunteered at the Senior Center and also at Heritage Towers where she lived for eight years before moving into long term care. She thoroughly enjoyed her pet cockatiel, Skipper. She is survived by one son, Floyd Cummings and his wife Lori of Buffalo; one daughter Jean Kerby and her husband Chris of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother Richard Morlan of Churdan, Iowa; two sisters Zelpha Olson of Texas and Donna Davis of Fort Dodge, Iowa; five grandchildren Clint Cummings and his wife Ashley and their children Trapper and Hunter of Casper, Tim Godwin and his daughter Kassidy Street of, Des Moines, Iowa, Karla Conrad and her daughter Isabella of Des Moines, Kyle Cummings of Buffalo and Ronnie Cummings of California; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and her bird and 30 year companion Skipper. She was preceded in death by her parents her husband and one son Loyd, five sisters and two brothers.
