Orville George Van Gundy, 5th child of 13 born to parents Ralph Van Gundy and Zella Eudella Herrick Van Gundy, joined his family on June 22, 1931 in Greene County, Iowa. He died at his home in Jamaica, Iowa December 5, 2018 at the age of 87 years, 5 months, 13 days. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. Pastor Larry Monthei, Hope Parish United Methodist Churches, Cooper, Iowa provided the words of comfort, with Chuck Schott providing the music, How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace and If I Had A Hammer. Bub's casket bearers were Jeff Van Gundy, Carl Hebert, Troy Van Gundy, David Dueland, Heidi Clark and Scott Van Gundy. Orville's burial was at the Richland Township Cemetery, Jamaica with Military Rites by the U.S. Army Honors Detail, Camp Dodge, Iowa. Following the services at the cemetery a time of lunch and fellowship was held at the Jamaica Community Center. Orville was lovingly nicknamed "Bub" and that is how he has been known for many years. Bub spent much of his life in Jamaica, attending all twelve years of schooling there, graduating in 1949. He was drafted in 1952, served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan and Korea. Bub was honorably discharged with the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Bub was a very proud veteran and faithfully wore his military cap. Bub married Charlene Dueland on October 1, 1960 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with two children Jill Rae and Joel Thomas. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and uncle. Bub enjoyed playing baseball with Joel in their yard and attended all of his sporting events. He had, himself, played baseball and joined the Jamaica Town Team and then ran the Bagley Town Team. The Van Gundy boys' mother, Zella, asked all of them to form a team to play together. They willingly obliged her request. Bub loved being outdoors. He mowed lawns, scooped snow, groomed yards, picking up each stick, kept the bird feeders tended to, and picked up walnuts. Bub had a passion for riding his bicycle. He could be found near and far, cycling, often times ten miles a day. He would pick up cans for recycling. When he would break Charlene's rules and rode on Highway 141, he was usually tattled on by caring friends and neighbors! Through the years he liked to fish and enjoyed fishing trips with his family and friends. Bub shared his interest with card playing with family and friends. His grandchildren enjoyed their times with grandpa playing board games and other activities. Bub was a master builder and he took great pride in constructing homes and other projects. Once the foundation was dug, he took over, single handily completing the work. He was his own sub-contractor, and tackled all the facets of the building construction, including, but not limited to, the wiring, plumbing, and finish work. Folks far beyond the YJB area called on him. Bub was also that special friend who could assist with an emergency or special need. Indeed he will be missed. Bub was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Carolyn Sue in infancy; Bonnie Marchant; Marvel Kenney; and brothers: James, Stanley, LeRoy, and Dean. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 58 years, Charlene; daughter Jill Van Gundy of Perry; son Joel Van Gundy (Amy) of Lone Tree, Colorado; two grandchildren: Rachel Morgan and Blake Thomas; his sister Martha Stracke (Don) of Perry; brothers: Vernon (Patty); Gordon ( Janet ); Robert (Kathy); all of Jamaica; and Ron (Debbie) of Perry; many special nieces and nephews; other relatives and many, many friends.
