Paul Marston, 79, of Earlham died March 8, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. John Paul Marston was born in Winterset, Iowa on September 30, 1941, the youngest of three children born to Gale Marston and Gayle (Wynkoop) Marston. He grew up on the farm and went to school in Earlham, graduating in 1959. Educated at Iowa State and the University of Iowa, he graduated with a BA in English and with an Army Commission from Iowa in 1963. Proudly he served in in the U.S. Army from 1963 – 1967. After working for his brother, Ted in a greenhouse business in Seattle, he came back to the family farm. Early in farming, he also taught English for three years at what was then Adel-Desoto High School. Though his marriage to Rebecca Johnson twice ended in divorce, he added family by the way of legally adopted son, Scott Cutting. He enjoyed life: livestock and the hard work outdoors, gardening, planting and taking care of his many flower gardens, curious, interesting people, solitude, and learning. Paul loved his dogs and his horses and he had some skill in, and got much satisfaction from leather-working. Always there were books. Joy came by the way of Scott and Jess and their girls, Ashlynne and Brooklyn. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Gale Marston and Gayle (Wynkoop) Marston; sister, Barbara Marston; and brother, Ted Marston. He is survived by his son, Scott (Jessica) Cutting and granddaughters, Ashlynne and Brooklyn of Earlham; nephew, Grant (Ligaya) Marston and their children, Ben and Eleanor of San Ramon, CA; sister-in-law, Dorothy Will Marston of Kirkland, WA; and a handful of cousins. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. Family will greet friends 1 hour prior to the service on Thursday. Paul will be interred in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter at 12:30 PM on Thursday. Paul requested memorial contributions be sent to Delta Tau Delta, 10000 Allisonville Rd., Fishers, IN 46038-2008. The memorial service will be live streamed at www.caldwellparrish.com under Paul’s obituary page and the Tribute Wall tab.
