Phil Ray Young, son of Ralph and Bernice (Kirkland) Young, was born May 19, 1948 in Creston, Iowa. He graduated from Orient Macksburg High School in 1966 and continued his education at Southwestern Community College receiving his Associates Degree in 1971. Later, he attended and graduated from Northwest Missouri State in 1972 majoring in Art Education. While attending Northwest Missouri State, Phil met Carol McIntyre and they were married March 31, 1972 at the Macksburg Methodist Church and to this union three children were born. During his working years, Phil was an Art Teacher. He worked at East Elementary in Ankeny where he taught until 1988 when he moved to Missouri. While there he had a 20 year career at the Chesterfield Day School at Chesterfield. Later he helped found the Chesterfield Day School in St. Albans and was a teacher there until 2008 when he moved to the Lake of the Ozarks and worked at Calo, a school for troubled teens. In 2012, he moved back to Iowa to be closer to his sisters. Phil was proud to have served 26 and a half years in both the Iowa Army National Guard and later Air National Guard. Phil loved anything to do with art and was honored to have been asked by a colleague to illustrate a children’s book she had written. He especially loved the creation of art pottery and was a great cook and gardener; having won gardening awards for his amazing floral gardens. He was very involved in family history and researching his genealogy. He also loved to go shopping and attend the Iowa State Fair. Above all else, Phil was a loving father and grandfather who cherished the time he was able to spend with his family. Phil is survived by three children, Scott (Cheri) Young and Rae Lynn Webb both of O’Fallon, MO, and Aaron Young of Florissant, MO; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Maxine (Lee) Wheeler of Lorimor and Myrtle Bailey of Altoona; nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois Young; brother, Dale (Doris) Young; and brother-in-law, Lawrence Bailey.
