Ralph was born April 3, 1917 in Macksburg, Iowa, the son of George and Myrtle (Edgington) Kirkland. He married Leona McDonald on November 5, 1938 in Maryville, Missouri and to this union three sons were born; Warren, Carl, and Ronald. He is survived by his wife, Leona Kirkland of Winterset, three sons, Warren Kirkland and wife, Betty of Winterset, Carl Kirkland and wife, Peggy of Lorimor, and Ronald Kirkland and wife, Denise of Macksburg; one sister, Dorothy Young of Winterset; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents, four brothers, Harland, Worth, Floyd, and Cleve; two sisters, Bernice and Grace; and a granddaughter, Brenda Kirkland Smith. Ralph liked farming, running the ‘cat’, camping with family, playing with his children and grandchildren, and visiting relatives, neighbors and friends. Ralph spent most of his working career as a farmer. He also drove truck, was a heavy equipment operator, and worked for the county for a time. He was a member of the Macksburg United Methodist Church, was Mayor of Macksburg for 8 plus years and served on the city council. Ralph was a member of the IOOF Lodge of Macksburg, the Macksburg Coffee Club, and was a founding member of the Methodist Church Men’s Club. He was also a member of Farm Bureau and the Madison County Cattlemen’s Association and the Madison County Pork Producer’s Association.
