Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. A visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 10 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare. Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter. Memorials may be made to Middle River Hospice. Raymond Carroll Thompson was born October 5, 1947 in Knoxville, Iowa; the son of Leland and Dorothy (Hill) Thompson. He graduated from Des Moines Technical High School and attended Central Missouri State. His marriage to Frances “Fran” Allgeyer took place on September 8, 1968 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Ray served in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the Iowa Army National Guard after 40 years and then worked for Catalytic Industrial Systems in military sales for a time. Ray was dedicated to his military career and was honored with many awards, including: 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Army Achievement Medals, 9 Army Reserve Component Achievement Medals, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 4 Vietnam Service Medals, 3 Armed Forces Reserve Medals, 3 Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbons, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam National Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Iowa Leadership Ribbon with torch, and 6 Iowa State Service Ribbons. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Winterset, the Lions International, and served on the Winterset Planning and Zoning Committee. He was a Scout Master for BSA Troop 121 and was a little league coach and umpire and a wrestling referee. Ray especially loved watching his grandchildren play sports and attended as many events as possible. Ray died Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at West Bridge Care and Rehabilitation in Winterset. He was 65. He is survived by his wife, Fran of Winterset; his mother, Dorothy Thompson of Corydon; his children, Anthony “Tony” Thompson (Janel) of Cedar Falls, Eric Thompson (Deena) of Winterset, Danielle “De” Landers (Ross Maddy) of Ankeny; siblings, Sally Stanley (Bill) of Clio, Lou Ellen Dee of Mitchellville, and Kurt Thompson (Kathy) of Quincy, IL; six grandchildren, Brady, Regan, Bryce, Ty, Tate, and Will; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Leland; a sister, Jeanie (Thompson) McCarty; grandparents, Nobel Raymond Hill, Garneth (Reams) Hill Pierson, Archie Carroll Thompson, and Maggie (Safford) Thompson Faber.
