David was born on June 17, 1954, to Dale Shepherd and Joyce Owens (Ross) in Indianapolis, IN, and later adopted by Ralph Carscadden. After David graduated from Richard King High School in Corpus Christi, TX in 1972, he went on to get his Bachelor of Arts in 1976 from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. He also received his Master of Divinity in 1980 from Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. In 1973, David met the love of his life in Sherrie Stowe at the Gardendale Baptist Church. They were married in 1974 and went on to have two children, Jeremiah and Joshua. As a child, David learned to bowl. By the time he was a teenager, he was nationally ranked and on a path to bowl professionally. However, during that time, he found Jesus Christ and made the decision to dedicate his life to Christ. After attending seminary David, Sherrie, and their two boys moved from Texas to Iowa and he was called to lead the First Southern Baptist Church of Adel, IA. David was an athlete of many other sports throughout his life. He excelled at any racquet sport but particularly loved racquetball and ping-pong. He was an avid cyclist and participated in RAGBRAI many times. While he may have been a picky eater, David loved a good cheeseburger. And if it was a Whataburger cheeseburger, even better! He may have been Whataburger’s biggest fan and often planned his many travels around how to find the closest location. David was an avid reader and book collector. His intellect combined with his wealth of knowledge and love for people made him the great pastor that he was and such a joy to be around. When he was asked if he had any regrets about not becoming a pro bowler, David said “I’d sought fulfillment through athletic success, but it wasn’t there. It was the peace Jesus gives that I needed so desperately. There’s nothing else I’d rather be doing that what I am.” David was preceded in death by his mother Joyce Ross and his birth father Dale Shepherd. He is survived by his father Ralph Carscadden (Fay) of Shreveport, LA; his wife Sherrie of Adel, IA; sons Jeremiah Carscadden (Alexis) of Chicago, IL and Joshua Carscadden (Jennifer), granddaughters Kendall and Adelina of Minneapolis, MN; brothers Timothy Carscadden (Susan) and Jay Carscadden (Jessica) of Shreveport, LA; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Adel, Iowa on Tuesday, March 1, from 5-7pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the same funeral home on Wednesday, March 2, at 11am. The family will require masks to be worn during both the visitation and service.
