He attended Winterset High School and later married Ruth Croft on December 18, 1954 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. During his working career, Rex was employed by the City of Winterset for several years before going out on his own to be self-employed as an electrician and carpenter, which he did until he retired in 1993. Rex served as a councilman for the City of Winterset from 1975 to 1981. He coached girls’ softball, played men’s baseball as a catcher and he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. All this said; Rex was most of all a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who loved nothing more than time with his family. Rex is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruthie Dorrell of Winterset; his three children, Rachel (Rae Lynn) Dorrell of Winterset; Randy (Nancie) Dorrell of Ankeny; Ragina (Craig) Rothamel of Winterset; a sister, Berniece (Bud) Hansen of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Melinda Jo (Brandon) Gehrke, Kathryn Dorrell, Andrew (Sasha Mecham) Dorrell and Tyson Rothamel and one great granddaughter, Quinn Gehrke. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret (Leonard) Binns.
