Richard David Miller

Richard D. Miller passed away March 16, 2017 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, in Johnston, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, March 21, 2017 with interment to follow at Glendale Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home on Monday, March 20, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a vigil service beginning at 7:00 PM. Dick was born in Des Moines, IA on January 6, 1928 to Howard and Alma (Rinard) Miller. Dick graduated from North High, Des Moines in 1946 and served in the Army from 1946 to 1948. Dick and Darlene Young were married July 29, 1950 in Des Moines. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dick and Darlene lived in Dayton, OH, Marshalltown, IA, Wytheville, VA, Columbus, OH, and Leawood, KS, before retiring in Des Moines. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in eight states. He had been employed at General Motors – Frigidaire, Lennox Industries, Emerson Electric in the product design and development areas, and at Energy Masters as an energy saving consultant. Dick was a member of St. Mary of Nazareth Church, St. Mary Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Iowa Lion Eye Bank, Des Moines Engineer Club, and SCORE, business mentoring program, with SBA. He had been active in the past with Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement and several professional societies. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and he and Darlene spent many winters in South Texas. Survivors include Kathleen (John) Dautremont of Des Moines, Richard (Mary Lynn) Miller, Jr. of Marshalltown, Timothy (Kimberly) Miller of Simpsonville, SC; six grandchildren, Richard III, Charles, Megan, Elizabeth, Michael, and Meredith; eight great grandchildren; brother-in-law Charles Young of Urbandale and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Darlene, his parents, Howard and Alma Miller, and grandson Austin Miller. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary of Nazareth Men’s Club.
