Richard “Dean” Harsh passed away on July 14, 2016 at the Perry Lutheran Home in Perry at the age of 80 years old. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday, July 18 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. with prayer service at 7 p.m. Dean was born on May 16, 1936 in Adel, Iowa to Ralph and Eileen (Clapper) Harsh. It set a record for being the hottest summer on record. His mother had to call friends and neighbors to help her try to keep Dean cool as there was no AC. Dean graduated from Adel High School in 1955. He was in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. After returning home, he went to work for Straight Engineering as a draftsman and later as purchasing agent. He retired in 1996. Dean bowled for 30 years. His greatest achievement was when he and his son won the State Father & Son bowling tournament besting the local bowling alley’s owner and son. He also enjoyed college football and playing cards with the guys. After retirement Dean spent his time taking care of his “7” flower gardens. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Adel; his sons, Doug of Adel and Brad of California; a sister, Janice Sloan of Madrid; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ron. If lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Adel Historical Museum, Adel Library or Good Samaritan Food Pantry.
