Richard “Dick” Nelson, 82, of Van Meter passed away from complications of COPD at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on June 18, 2024.
Dick was born on May 16, 1942, in Summerset, Iowa, to Ardean and Dorothy (Wright) Nelson. He attended Indianola Schools before leaving to join the workforce. On July 29, 1961, he married Grace McCool at the Open Bible Church in Des Moines. Dick worked for Meredith Corporation, which later became R.R. Donnelley, as a roll clamp operator until 2002. He then decided it was time to enjoy retirement.
Dick enjoyed being outdoors and spent as much time as he possibly could in nature. He especially loved the water, so much so that he purchased a houseboat to entertain family and friends. Traveling was another love for both Dick and Toot, taking any opportunity to travel Iowa’s scenic byways, whether by car or motorcycle. Their favorite destination was the Mississippi River. Later in life they spent countless hours at the campground enjoying the company of family and friends.
Dick will be missed by his wife of 62 years, Grace; his four children, Johni (Scott) Smith of Waukee, Frankie (Bill) Herman of Dexter, Jodene (Clint) Lane of Van Meter, and Rick (Buffy) Nelson of Van Meter; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Frank (Dorothy) Nelson of Prairie City; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ardean and Dorothy; siblings Eldon, Bub, Bill, Gene, Don, and Linda; and his sister-in-law Sandy.
Per Dick’s request, no services will be held. We will gather for a celebration of life later this fall. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a future designated memorial. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.caldwellparrish.com.
