Richard E. Luther, 88, of Adel passed away on Friday, February 1, 2013. He is survived by his second wife, Doris Mae Luther, children, Nancy (Bill) Danhof, Anne (Jim) Harmon, Don (Jo) Luther, grandchildren - Angela, Becky, Jake, Brian, Michael, Laura and Josh along with 10 great grandchildren. His first wife, Doris Esther Luther, infant son, sister Jenny Rogers, and parents, Thelma and Donald Luther, predeceased Dick. Dick grew up in the small town of Adel, Iowa where he learned the love of family, his Lord, and the richness of the world around him through hunting, fishing, working the land, and observing all nature had to offer. After graduating from college with a degree in Electrical Engineering Dick joined the Navy and became one of the first Radiomen with Radar qualifications in World War II. He married the love of his life, Doris Esther Boren, while on leave in Chicago. After the war he and Doris moved back to Iowa where they raised their children in West Des Moines while he worked for Iowa Power and Light Company followed by moves to several towns in the Midwest when he changed careers working for Motorola. Dick loved to spend time fishing, hunting, gardening, in photography, learning computer technology, music, was an avid reader and was active again in Boy Scouts and his church. He shared all of these things with his children teaching them to take part fully in the world around them. Later in life, when Dick moved back to Adel, he married for a second time to Doris Mae Wilcox. Visitation will be at McCally Funeral Home in Adel on Tuesday February 5 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. A celebration of his life will be held in funeral services at First Christian Church, Adel, IA, on Wednesday, February 6 at 2 pm. Remembrances may be sent to American Kidney Fund or First Christian Church, Adel, IA.
