Robert Edwin Hines

Robert Edwin Hines, son of Edwin Orval Hines and Esther Margaret Isaac Hines, was born October 30, 1918, in Griswold, Iowa, died May 4, 2008 at the Dallas County Hospital, Perry, Iowa, after a long struggle with emphysema and congestive heart failure. He was 89 years, 6 months and 4 days. Robert's family moved to Perry when he was a small boy and he lived the rest of his life in Perry. His father opened Hines Shoe Store on Second Street which later became Eddy's Shoe Store. Bob graduated from Perry High School in 1937. Bob served in the Army during WW II, where he wrote for his company's newspaper during his tour in Burma. He married Helen Havens on December 31, 1939. They were parents of two children, David and Margaret. Bob had lived in the same home on Otley since 1946. He was the last living founder of St. Martins Episcopal Church. He had many talents and a keen interest in photography, setting up a dark room in his basement to do developing. He later painted pictures. Bob's love of fishing led him to build his own boat which he and Helen enjoyed. Bob retired from the Milwaukee Railroad and after retirement he and his wife Helen took up golf and were members of the Woodward Golf and Recreation Club for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Lawrence Hines, and his wife, Helen. Bob is survived by his son David and wife Gloria of Cleveland, Ohio; daughter Margaret Burris and husband Lovell of Bouton, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Julie Dick and husband Nate of Runnells; Mark Hines and fianc Holly Oslin; Shannon Hines and Zack Joebelt; Kristin Pollack and husband Josh; all of Cleveland, Ohio; Billy Hines and Shelley of Breckenridge, Texas; Bobby Hines and Samantha ; and Liz Mendoza and husband Ernesto all of Abilene, Texas; 13 great grandchildren; sister Phyllis Mastin of Virginia; and sister-in-law Norma Hines of San Francisco, California; one niece; five nephews; other relatives and many friends.
