Robert Steenrod

May 25, 1942 — October 25, 2005

Robert was born in Rochester, Minnesota on May 25, 1942; the son of Emerson J. and Dorien E. (Reid) Steenrod and was raised in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1960 and then attended the University of Iowa where he enjoyed playing trumpet in the University of Iowa Marching Band. He later became the voice of the Hawkeye Marching Band from 1969-1972. His marriage to Sharon Golightly took place on December 9, 1972 in West Des Moines, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sharon; his daughter, Heather Steenrod of West Des Moines; two sons, Chris Steenrod & wife, Ann of Iowa City; Ryan Steenrod of West Des Moines; his granddaughter, Carly Steenrod of Iowa City; his aunt, Lorna Reid; his sister Pat Steenrod; his sister-in-law & brother-in-law Ruby & Jerry Brandow & many other loving family members. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. Robert worked for the Bankers Life Company which later became the Principal Financial Group for over 28 years. He then changed careers and enjoyed selling men’s tailored clothing at Younkers and working for Aerus Electrolux. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Waveland Park Lodge No. 654, Des Moines Scottish Rite Consistory & the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Robert truly enjoyed golfing, photography, singing in his barbershop quartet and playing his trumpet. He loved attending the University of Iowa Football games and climbing the mountains of Colorado. His most favorite pastime was spending time with his family and especially his granddaughter. He will be truly missed as he was an inspiration to every life he touched.
