Robert Vernon 'Bob' Crowl

Robert “Bob” Crowl died of a heart attack at the Guthrie County Hospital surrounded by his family on April 27, 2017. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 1 at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel. Burial with honors will be at West Linn Cemetery near Linden. Family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday April 30 at the funeral home with prayer service at 4:00 p.m.. Bob was born on November 14, 1936 to Chester and Hazel (Gutshall) Crowl in Dexter, Iowa. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1954. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958 and was stationed primarily in Japan. He married Connie Farley (Lenze) in 1968 and lived on the family farm until 2015. Bob farmed and worked in the manufacturing and meat processing industries. As a “nontraditional” learner, he attended DMACC and earned his degree in Health Care Administration in 1990. Bob was passionate about gardening-planting hundreds of trees and flowers at the farm and later at Lakeside Village in Panora, where he was known for the tulips and roses he put in there. He and Connie spent several winters in Apache Junction Arizona where he carried on his love for gardening and tended the plants and flowers on the community grounds. He earned his Master Gardeners certification in Iowa and was a member of the Adel program and later in Arizona. He was proud of his contribution to nature and wildlife, selling the farm property to allow for creation of the West Bend Wildlife Refuge. Bob was also a member of the American Legion 261 in Redfield. He is survived by his children; Teresa (Nick) Nolan of Redfield, Tami (Mike) Hoyt of Waukee and Jen Crowl of Adel; four grandchildren, Lacey (Brad) Reynolds, Andy Nolan, Kyle (Ashli) Hoyt and Jordan Hoyt, two great grandsons; his brother Jerry (Joyce) Crowl of Las Cruces, NM and sister Martha (Stacy) Hart of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his wife Connie, son Tom, his parents, a brother and infant sister. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a placement of a memorial to benefit the community of Redfield. Online condolences may be left on this site.
