December 14, 1956 — June 30, 2017

Ron Hubbard, 60, of Winterset died unexpectedly Friday, June 30, 2017, at his home. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 27 at Ochiltree Funeral Service with family present to receive friends during this time. A graveside service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter. Ronald Dean Hubbard was born December 14, 1956 in Manchester, Iowa, the son of Harry and Irene (Wiley) Hubbard. Ron grew up on the family farm near Elkader. He was a graduate of Central Community High School and served in the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Seabees. While in the Navy, he was stationed in Gulfport, MS and was deployed twice. Following his service in the Navy, Ron moved to Garner where he joined the police department and was promoted to Sergeant. He was also a certified D.A.R.E. officer, PR-24 instructor and a member of North Iowa’s Area Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor Team. In 1995, Ron continued his career in law enforcement, moving to Winterset to become the Assistant Chief of Police. Unfortunately, his career was cut short because of a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis and therefore, retired from his service as a police officer. Following his distinguished 22 year career in law enforcement, Ron kept busy writing for the Madisonian and had articles published in the MS Focus Magazine. He was also active in other clubs and support groups. Ron enjoyed hanging out with his family and visiting his father on their family farm as often as he was able. He lived every day to the fullest and was heard saying the following statement often, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift”. Ron is survived by his father, Harry Hubbard of Elkader; daughter, Sandy (Justin) Fyfe of Van Meter, son, Matt (Tina) Hubbard of Algona; a sister, Cheryl Scheffert of Garber; two brothers, Dave (Sheri) Hubbard of Garner and Roger (Trish) Hubbard of Peru; four grandkids, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, brother-in-law, Gail Scheffert and a nephew, Mike Hubbard.
