Ruth C. Wicks, 98, peacefully passed away December 15, 2015 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 21st at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren near Adel with burial following at Church of the Brethren Cemetery at Panther Creek. Friends may call after NOON Sunday, December 20th at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel where family will greet friends from 2-5 p.m. with prayer service at 5 p.m. Ruth was born May 10, 1917 to Burt and Mary (Ray) Garrett in Penn township, Madison County, Iowa. Her family moved to rural Linn township in Dallas County and she attended school in Redfield all the way through high school. She received a teaching degree from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, after which she taught school for three years in a consolidated school in Carroll County. On May 31, 1940 Ruth married Dale Wicks at Panther Creek Church of the Brethren. For four years they lived on a dairy farm near West Des Moines, and then moved to a farm in rural Adel near where she grew up. They lived there until October of 2014 when they moved to the Madrid Home. In 1945 she was called to be a deacon at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren, an office she held for 43 years. She taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years there, and served as children's director for many years. She held offices in the church's Women's Fellowship and sewed countless hours making items to be given to the less fortunate. Ruth served several terms on the church board, and also on the Northern Plains District Agri-Urban board. She served on the women's Farm Bureau council at the county level and was a member and officer of the Friendly Neighbors Club, originally a Farm Bureau club. Ruth enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. She took many bouquets of gladiolas to those who were sick or living in nursing homes. She enjoyed sewing and made many of her own clothes. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and baking cookies with them. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Alice (Percy) Jenkins and Elsie (Bob) Price, and brothers Ray (Hollace) Garrett, Mark (Elizabeth) Garrett, and Harmon (Lucy) Garrett, and by her son Paul (LaVeda) Wicks of Kansas City, MO. She is survived by her husband Dale, brother Harold Garrett of Adel, children John (Maureen) Wicks of Des Moines, Janet Russell of Sapulpa, OK, Roy (Marlene) Wicks of Woodward, Peter (Brenda) Wicks of Adel, and Alan (Roxanne) Wicks of Minburn, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be directed to Panther Creek Church of the Brethren or Heifer Project. Online condolences may be left at this site.
