Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg. A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 4, 2011 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset; where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Peru Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice. Sam Thompson was born November 1, 1939 in Des Moines, the son of Jay C. and Mary Alice (Catterlin) Thompson. He graduated from Macksburg High School in 1958 and later married Marjorie Stumpf. His second marriage was to Linda Dillinger who preceded him in death in 1998. Sam worked for Martin Marietta in various positions during his 33 year tenure and his retirement in 2002. Following his retirement, Sam has worked with the Winterset Parks and Rec Department, working as recently as two weeks ago. He was a member of the Patterson United Methodist Church and the Hitching Post Grill. He loved fishing and playing horseshoes. He also loved sports, especially auto racing, the Chicago Bears, the Iowa State Cyclones and rooting for whatever team was playing the Hawkeyes. Sam died Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at his home. He was 72. He is survived by two daughters, Sherri (Mike) Young of Winterset and Laura (Eric) Forret of Urbandale; two sons, Rich (Cheryl) McKinney of West Des Moines and Jo (Fona) Holtry of St. Charles; a sister, Phyllis Kirkland of Winterset; a brother, John (Bette) Thompson of Bolivar, MO; nine grandchildren, Amie Thompson, Noah Munoz, Hannah Munoz, Gabe (Amanda) Green, Jacob Green, Mazie Woods, Mikailyn Holtry, Linda Mae Holtry, and Maddie Jo Holtry; one great-grandchild, Allura Duffy; and special friend, Sandy Rippenkroeger of West Des Moines. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda; and a sister, Evelyn Harden.
