Sherrie Opal Atwell

Sherrie Opal Atwell was born on October 4, 1958 to Charles and Shirley (Adams) Day in Liberal, Kansas. She graduated from Liberal High School in 1977, then continued her education at Seward County Community College as a Music major, also within Liberal, Kansas. She received her associate degree in 1979. Sherrie was a very talented musician and singer. Her favorite instrument to play was the saxophone. Her favorite songs to sing to her children were "Somewhere Out There" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Her favorite Christmas songs were "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Mary Did You Know". She loved performing in many community musicals. Sherrie met the love of her life, Doug, in high school. Their first date took place on February 25, 1978 when Doug drove Sherrie around and they talked for hours within the famous Chevelle. They dated for almost a year before Doug proposed to Sherrie at a gas station in Minneola, Kansas on their way to a wrestling meet. They got married on April 27, 1979 at the First United Methodist Church in Liberal, Kansas. Then they were sealed together with their family on September 21, 1982 in the Latter-day Saints Logan Temple in Logan, Utah. Together Doug and Sherrie had five sons and one daughter between living in Kansas and then moving to Perry, Iowa in 1991. Sherrie owned an in-home day care where she cared for many children around the neighborhood. She was the ultimate mom to her children and all the children she knew and loved. Sherrie was involved in the music program, and she was the music director for the children and the congregation for the Latter-day Saints ward in Perry. She held a lot of leadership positions within the BSA scouting organization. Including supporting four of her sons achieve their Eagle Scout Merit badge, and one grandson. Sherrie joined her Heavenly Father on December 25, 2023 at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by her sweetheart, Doug, her loving children and her wonderful grandchildren. Sherrie is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Shirley Day, father-in-law Elmo Atwell (whom she had a very special relationship with), along with many grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sherrie is survived by her loving husband of almost 45 years, Doug; their children: Jeremiah Atwell (Dani) of Perry, IA, Joshua Atwell (Melissa) of Jamaica, IA, Sariah Brendeland (Chris) of Huxley, IA, Daniel Atwell (Emma) of Eagle Mountain, UT, Joseph Atwell (Macy) of Buffalo, NY, and Ethan Atwell (Hannah) of Ames, IA; her grandchildren: Taylor, Kassidy, Alissa, Noah, and Owen Atwell of Perry, IA, Corbyn, Piper, and Margot Atwell of Jamaica, IA, Cayden and Callie Brendeland of Huxley, IA, Dalton, Maylee, Eleanor and Ruth Atwell of Eagle Mountain, UT, and Edwin Atwell of Ames, IA; plus many grand pups; her brother Darren Day (Lynn) of Liberal, KS; many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law Bonnie Atwell of Perry, IA. *Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Perry. Visitation will start one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in the Violet Hill Cemetery. Hastings Funeral Home in Perry is in charge of these arrangements.
