Shirley Ann Korver

Shirley Ann Korver was born in Hull, Iowa on May 27, 1933 to her parents, Gordon and Jacoba Mackie. She graduated from Hull High School and then Northwestern Junior College. She became an elementary school teacher upon graduation. In 1954, she met her future husband, Russell Korver, and married on June 9, 1955. Russell and Shirley celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2015. Shirley continued to teach school until the birth of her son Brent in 1963, when she became a stay at home mother and child care provider. Her daughter, Jill was born in 1967. When her children were school age, Shirley went to work at Sears where she retired in 1989. In retirement, Shirley kept exceptionally busy, spending her time helping with the Des Moines Visitor and Convention Bureau as well as the Food Bank in Surprise, Arizona. She was a member of the Meredith Drive Reformed Church for over 40 years. Her passions were watching the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Hawks, dancing with Russell and playing bridge and canasta with her many close friends. But above all, Shirley put her entire heart into caring and doting upon her two grandchildren to whom she was tremendously devoted Shirley left this world on Monday, May 9, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Milton Mackie. Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Russell Korver, her 2 children, son Brent (Debbie) Korver, daughter Jill Korver and her 2 grandchildren, Madeline and Andrew Korver. Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and many, many wonderful friends. A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 9:00 AM 11:00 AM at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Urbandale Food Pantry, 7611 Douglas Avenue #34-35, Urbandale, IA 50322
