Shirley Jean Grant Templet went to her heavenly home on Monday, October 4, 2021, in Waukee, Iowa, five days before her 87th birthday. Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up there with her beloved sister and brother. She attended Grosse Pointe High School in Detroit, where she played the clarinet in their marching band, and from which she graduated in 1952. At the age of 56, Shirley decided to get her college degree and attended Armstrong State College in Savannah, Georgia—almost 40 years older than her classmates! Shirley graduated from Armstrong State College in 1992 with an Associate in Arts Degree. Shirley married Charles Alexander Templet in 1952 and became a devoted mother of two, who loved travelling extensively in Europe with her family. Her three years living on Army bases in Germany was a joyful time for Shirley, and she enjoyed recounting her memories of that time. Shirley lived in Savannah, Georgia, for 50 years, where she worked as an Office Administrator for St. Joseph’s Hospital, raised her two daughters, and was a valued member of White Bluff Methodist Church. In later years, Shirley lived at the Remington House in Irving, Texas, where she enjoyed attending First United Methodist Church of Coppell with her dear friends, afterwards moving to Waukee, Iowa, in 2021. Living in her apartment at Independence Village in Waukee, Shirley had a lovely circle of friends and volunteered at the Independence Village library. Shirley was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, church, and friends. Shirley was an avid reader who loved gardening, dancing, classic films, and watching Georgia Bulldogs football games. More than anything in the world, Shirley loved her two daughters and grandson. Shirley’s sweet personality and gentle demeanor will be missed by all who knew her. Shirley is survived by her two daughters, Susan Beblawi and her husband Amgad of Urbandale, Iowa, and Mary Mortensen and her husband Kurt of Santa Cruz, California; and by her grandson Justin Beblawi of Pasadena, California. She was preceded in death by her mother Ruth Grant, her father, her sister Ruth Curtis, and her brother Roy Grant. Shirley will be cremated as was her wish, and a small private family gathering will release her cremains. In lieu of flowers and because of her deep love for children, please consider making a memorial donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. www.stjude.org
