Steve Greenslade

January 20, 1953 — February 26, 2022

Steve Greenslade passed away surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, February 26th at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines after a hard fought 4 1/2-year battle with Glioblastoma. Steve was born on January 20, 1953, in Winterset, IA to Harvey and Dolly Greenslade. They lived in Peru and then moved to Adel where he attended school. He was part of the Adel class of 1971. He met the love of his life Marcia Aldrich in 1979, together they raised 6 children and enjoyed 43 years with each other. He began working for his parent’s service station, Harvey’s Uptown DX, very early in life learning how to be a mechanic from his father. He continued the family business under the name of Steve’s Uptown Repair when Harvey passed away in 1992 and became a true icon of Adel, becoming many folks in towns preferred mechanic. He worked very hard to provide for his family. His children and Grandchildren will always remember the times they would come to the station, and Steve would give them rides on the hoist or share a snack or pop out of the pop machine with them. Steve made many friends with his customers and other business owners around town. He was rather accustomed to his daily stops at Casey’s, ans while he was still able, he would often have Marcia drop him off to take a little walk with stops at Napa, Casey’s, the Dentist Office, and stop to check in with his buddies at other businesses around town while Marcia ran errands. Steve enjoyed classic cars and taking his ’71 El Camino to car shows with his buddies or taking Marcia on a date night to McDonald’s in Stuart! He was a NASCAR and History Channel Enthusiast. He was an amazing wood smith creating beautiful grandfather clocks as well as cedar chests for each of his children when they got married. He loved spending time sitting in the barn where his woodshop was, this was also where he installed a fun slot machine for the grandkids to play! Above all, Steve loved his family. While his children were young, he spent time teaching them how to swim, drive vehicles including dirt bikes and snowmobiles, and tried to teach the boys everything he could about being a mechanic. He would have calculator races with them while they did their math homework. He made sure that each of them learned hard work, whether it was while cutting wood or working at the station. The girls always called him Daddy as he would always say they were “Daddy’s Girls” and give them mustache kisses on the forehead; they knew they could get about anything from him if they batted their eyes. He always was sure to make each of his kids and daughter/son in laws feel special telling each one of them that they were his favorite! When any of his kids or grandkids would visit, you could be sure they would be greeted with Hey Cuties, Pretty Girls or Hey Stud! Above all Steve’s family knew he loved them and told us that till the very end when he could no longer get the words out. Steve was a fighter and had a very strong will to survive. Marcia took amazing care of Steve during his entire illness always researching what was the best treatment option, holistic approach, or healthiest food. We are so grateful for her devotion to keeping him with us as long as possible and know that the extra 4 years we got over what the doctors gave him at his diagnosis was because of this! Steve was preceded in death by son Kirk Greenslade, parents Harvey & Dolly, and brother Donny. Steve is survived by his wife Marcia, and his children Bret Greenslade of San Bernardino, CA; Nick & Shelby Greenslade of Adel; Kim & Jesse Wyckoff of Redfield, Lindsay & Brian Koons of Adel; Justin & Barb Greenslade of Adel. Grandchildren Jake (Unique), Kolby (Megan), Luke, Raquel, Hunter, Chloe, Maleah, Cooper, Kelsey, Titan, Lyla, Avery, Jadyn & Hannah, Great Grandpa to Jace, Laykin, Kipton, & Korver. As well as His Brother, Jim (Joy) Greenslade of Adel and sister, Sharon (Bud) Bryant of Eureka Springs, AR and many in laws, nieces & nephews and his cat who took special care of him, Elle. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home – McCalley Chapel.
