Terry Vancil, 81, of Perry, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on November 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Terry was born on June 2, 1943, in Oquawka, Illinois, to Warren and Doris (née Green) Vancil. He grew up in Oquawka, where he developed a lifelong love for sports and family. A 1961 graduate of Union High School, Terry went on to attend Eureka College in Illinois, earning his degree in English and Physical Education. While at Eureka, he excelled as an athlete and served as co-captain of the football team, a role that showcased his leadership and passion for teamwork.

In 1966, Terry married the love of his life, Anne Walz, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed Aviation Training in Pensacola, Florida, and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, where he worked for the US Armed Forces Staff College. After his honorable discharge as Lieutenant JG in 1969, Terry returned to Illinois to further his education, earning a master’s degree in Recreational Therapy from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1973.

Terry’s career reflected his compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others. He began his work as a Recreational Health Specialist in Ohio, focusing on individuals with special needs. In 1980, Terry moved to Perry, Iowa, where he continued his meaningful work at the Woodward State Resource Center until his retirement.

Above all, Terry's greatest love and joy in life was his family. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he poured his heart into every moment spent with them. Whether supporting his children and grandchildren at their activities or milestones, or simply sharing quiet moments together, Terry’s unwavering presence was a cornerstone of their lives. He was a constant source of encouragement, laughter, and pride, always ready with a kind word or a big hug. His family was not just a part of his life; they were his world, and his love for them will forever be cherished in their hearts.

Terry’s love for sports extended beyond his youth, as he played baseball and softball well into his forties. He was actively involved in Perry Girls Softball Association and the Perry Summer Swim Team program for many years. He also enjoyed camping, gardening, photography, and exploring genealogy. Terry found joy in playing the trumpet and sharing his love of music and dancing with others.

Terry is survived by his wife, Anne; daughters, Heather (Mike) Bley, Holly (Matt) Petersen, and Katherine Vancil; grandchildren, Hannah and Ethan Bley, Alex and Sam Petersen, and Sidney Vancil; brother, Richard G. Vancil; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Perry, Iowa, beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Terry’s honor may be directed to the American Legion (a U.S. Veterans Association) or Special Olympics Iowa.
