Thomas Suttie

Thomas Grant Suttie (84) died Thursday, September 19, at 11:11pm, surrounded by his family.

A visitation will be held at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home & Crematory (8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale Iowa, 50322) on Monday, September 23, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church (1230 Merle Hay Rd, Des Moines, IA 50311) on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the family for a cause to be named.

While Tom was a late bloomer—marrying for the first, and only, time at the age of 45—he was a devoted husband and father. He loved carpool duty and would regale his children and their classmates with stories and old radio jingles. He did laundry, packed lunches, and was a model of what true partnership looks like. He loved spending time in Door County, Wis., where there were many happy family memories and where he met his wife of 39 years—whom he adored.

Tom, a retired pharmacist, was a lifelong cyclist, a lover of radio, and pie connoisseur. Despite his sometimes-gruff exterior, he rarely met a stranger and was best known for his sarcastic, hilarious, and often slightly off-color jokes.

A man of deep faith, Tom’s compassion and kindness for his family, friends, and customers was unwavering. He was always happy to do whatever was needed for anyone he knew. He will no doubt continue to intercede for those who need him from heaven. After all, 1111 is a number that can signify that your guardian angel is nearby.

Tom leaves behind his wife, Jody and their four children—Cait Suttie, Anna Suttie, Clair Begley (Patrick), and Grant Suttie—as well as his siblings, Jim Suttie (Sandra) and Mary Ann Chaney (Mike). He was preceded in death by his parents, Grant and Mary Margaret Suttie and his brother, Mike Suttie.
