V. James 'Jim' Dooley

June 7, 1928 — April 21, 2009

Jim was born June 7, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa; the son of Thomas and Laura (Kelly) Dooley. He was a 1945 graduate of Martensdale High School. He married Ellen Wiedmann on February 7, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa at St. Ambrose Cathedral. Jim is survived by his ten daughters, Terri (Larry) Henson of Martensdale, Rosemary (Ron) Allsup of Winterset, Dee Armstrong of Adel, Jodi (Ted) Murphy of Winterset, Ginger (Neal) Tribby of St. Marys, Margie (Chuck) Gehringer of St. Marys, Joanne (Bryan) Hartman of Mediapolis, Nancy (Dean) Ross of Van Meter, Carol (Dan) Weltner of Sumner, and Denise Dooley of Urbandale; three sons, Mick Dooley of Lexington, KY, Kevin Dooley of Denver, CO, and Tim Dooley of Omaha, NE; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen on October 28, 2004; his parents; a grandson, Thomas Gehringer; and seven siblings. Jim owned and operated Dooley’s Tavern in West Des Moines for many years. He and his wife, Ellen, operated the Bread Shed, serving fried bread at the Covered Bridge Festival for 30 years. Jim also worked at Ankeny-Des Moines Plumbing, Inc. in Des Moines as shop manager for several years. He was a member of the Assumption Parish in Churchville, Iowa. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and was an honorary member of the American Legion Post #562 of Cumming and Post #716 of St. Mary’s, Iowa. Jim was a lifelong Cubs fan and he enjoyed bowling, pool, horse racing and playing cards. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. April 24, 2009 at St. Marys Parish Hall, St. Marys, Iowa. Service: 10:00 a.m., April 25, 2009 at St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Church, near Cumming, Iowa. Memorial: Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice, Martensdale Fire and Rescue or his church.
