Valarie Jean Kerns

Valarie Kerns, 71, passed away on November 25, 2022 at Azria Health in Winterset.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 2, 2022 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Interment will take place at a later date in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may directed to the family for a later designation. Valarie Jean (Comp) Kerns was born on March 9, 1951 to Russell and Helen (Cummings) Comp in Winterset, Iowa. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1969. She worked at the school for a number of years in the library and kitchen before becoming a stay-at-home mom, watching over her kids and grandkids. She married Ronald Kerns on June 29, 1969 at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

Val enjoyed her family, especially her grandkids, never missing an event or activity. She loved to support them in everything they did. She was also a supporter of the Madison County Democrats and helped the Blood Bank with blood drives. In her free time, Val liked to do word search puzzles, or as she called them, the circle books. She also enjoyed playing Bingo. She and Ron loved to go camping and took the grandkids to Okoboji every year.

Val is survived by her husband, Ron; son, Bart Kerns; daughter in-law, Kellie (Mike) Peebler; son in-law, Ken Johnson; grandchildren, Brooke (Mike) Mason, and Colt (Brandy) Kerns; and 4 great grandchildren, Drake, Blayne, Peyton, and Preslee. She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter, Kim Johnson.
