Velma LaVerne Johnson, 93, of Jefferson, died Monday at Carroll Health Care Center. Velma LaVerne, eldest daughter of Levi and Ethel Wiles Karber was born June 10, 1913 in Jefferson, Iowa and died March 26, 2007 at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 16 days. She spent her entire life in and around Jefferson. She attended Country School and graduated Jefferson High School in 1930. Velma LaVerne married Emil Andrew Johnson May 7, 1933 at her parent's home. They were parents of one son, Emil Eugene. Velma LaVerne and Emil farmed for many years and in 1974 purchased their home in Jefferson where she resided until 2006 when she moved to Carroll. She had worked for many years in many restaurants in Jefferson. Velma LaVerne had also worked at the Greene County Hospital kitchen and also worked at the Greene County Home. She joined the Methodist Church at an early age and in 1930 was baptized in the Central Christian Church where she was a faithful member. She also was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship and volunteered at the Greene County Christian Action Resource Center. In earlier years on the farm, she enjoyed her neighborhood club. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and visiting with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Emil, November 28, 1985; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Survivors include her son Emil Eugene and wife Carolyn of Carroll; grandons Ronald and wife Angie of Carroll; granddaughter Karent Hoffmann and husband John of Dunlap; 6 great-grandchildren, Kylie, Samantha, and Jacob Johnson, Justin, Tyler and Jason Hoffmann; sister, Hazel Matthews of Des moines, and sister-in-law, Pauline Johnson of Jefferson; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
