Verna Verlee Kent, 84, of Des Moines, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 17, 2017, at her home. A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m., Sunday, November 19, at Ochiltree Funeral Service with a reception to immediately follow at Ochiltree’s. A private burial will be held in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Unity Point Hospice. Verna Verlee Keltner, daughter of Ralph and Irene (Smithson) Keltner, was born December 21, 1932, near Redfield. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1951. Verna was united in marriage with Roderick Kent on December 14, 1952, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Verna worked as a secretary for several years before working for the Des Moines Schools Food Service for 32 years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of the Fort Des Moines Methodist Church for over 50 years and was also a member of Early Wheels of Iowa. She enjoyed many hobbies including, sewing, cooking, and refinishing furniture. She also loved her time as a homemaker, taking care of her family. She will be missed by many. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 64 years, Roderick of Des Moines; children, Brian (Ronda) Kent of Bellevue, NE, Renee King and Mary Slater both of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Kindra (Drew) Powell, Justin (Jessica) Mally, Mike (Chrissy) King, Josh King, Brandon Slater and Michelle Houseman; seven great-grandchildren, Delainey Oswald, Brecken Powell, Braeden Hambleton, Baylee King, Alec, Caleb and Autumn Slater; extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Greta (Keltner) Jarnagin.
