Wayne Helms

Billy Wayne Helms, son of Sam Billy Helms and Pattie Ruth Miller Helms was born January 22, 1948 in Cherokee, Oklahoma and died Wed January 12, 2011 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 62. Wayne, as he was lovingly called, moved with his family to Jefferson, Iowa when he was 9 months old. He lived in Jefferson most all of his life and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966. Wayne married Linda Marie Baugh September 23, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson and were blessed with three children, Jamie, Shonnez, and Jeremy. During high school Wayne always was employed, sometimes doing three jobs. During his lifetime he worked for Crouse Cartage Company out of Carroll, IA; Johnny Battles in Jefferson, IA; Oscar Mayer in Perry, IA; the Department of Transportation, and for 18 years was an officer of the Jefferson Police Force. For a few years he owned and operated the DX station on the corner of Elm and Lincolnway. Wayne loved his family very much and always enjoyed being with them. They shared his love of fishing, hunting, trapshooting, dirt bike racing and stock car racing. Wayne drove #17, the car owned by Baugh-Helms. Wayne made fishing poles, sharing them with family and friends, and enjoyed reading Western novels. He was preceded in death by his father Bill Helms, step-father Galen Goughnour, grandparents Rozella and Byrd Helms, and Beatrice and Ira Miller, as well as his in-laws Bud and Pat Baugh. Wayne is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Linda of Urbandale, IA; son Jamie Helms and wife Amanda of Churdan, IA and children Levi, Rozella, and Rylin; daughter Shonnez Reed and husband Heath of Lohrville, IA and children Zachary Helms-Florea, Chaylin Helms-Florea; Jared and Jenna Reed of Lohrville, IA; son Jeremy Helms and wife Melissa of West Des Moines, IA and children Breanna Helms of Redfield, IA, Tyler and Billy Wayne Helms of West Des Moines, IA; and mother Pat Helms Goughnour of Jefferson, IA. Wayne is also survived by his brother Mike Helms and wife Glenda of Early, TX; Kathy Cuddy and husband Steve of Naperville, IL; And sister Dawna Helms of Jefferson, IA; brother-in-law Bobby Baugh and wife Sandy of Jefferson, IA; Barbara Baugh of Lamar, CO; Steve Baugh of Panora, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
