William "Bill" Collier

August 26, 1940 — September 28, 2022

William Lawrence Collier was born August 26, 1940 from the union of Clyde and Dorothy Collier, in Des Moines, Iowa. His parents were blessed with seven children in all: William and his siblings, Lillian, Dorothy Ann, Richard, Irwin, Mary Jane, and Kenneth.

He graduated from East High School in Des Moines and later took courses in architectural drafting. William was hired by Steel Craft in Des Moines where he worked on many wrought iron projects out of state and his work was featured at local businesses including the downtown Marriott and Sears in Merle Hay Mall. He then worked as a mechanic at the U.S. Postal Service in Urbandale, Iowa where he received letters of appreciation for his projects. William retired after 31 years of service.

William was talented in so may ways such as remodeling several houses on the east side, rebuilding a large trailer with a pullout bed and kitchen for traveling, repaired vehicles, designed and built his own furniture, refurbished boats for fishing, and he reupholstered car seats. He could also use a sewing machine almost as well as his mother and would alter his own pants, jackets, and coats.

He had a fondness for animals. On payday he purchased large bags of food for birds and squirrels. His special buddy was Duke, a German Shepherd who weighed over 100 pounds and travelled with him.

William also enjoyed hunting and loved fishing and often would be seen fishing in a suit off of the Scott Street bridge.

William was at Taylor House in Des Moines for a few pain free days before his homecoming on Wednesday, September 28th when he slipped away into God’s awaiting arms.

William leaves to cherish his life and memories his sister, Mary Jane (Don) Graves, a special niece Donna (Sissy) (Kevin) Burkett of Des Moines, Iowa and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. We loved us some William and he loved his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
