William 'Bill' L. Van Werden

William Bill L. Van Werden was born September 26, 1933 in Winterset, Iowa, the son of Charles and Virginia (Parish) Van Werden. He graduated from Winterset High School and later attended the University of Iowa. His marriage to Sylvia Bartleson took place on October 11, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois. Bill and his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1967 where he served as a sales manager for Lincoln Tour and Travel. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Lincoln, NE; his children, Charles Van Werden (Jill) of Petoskey, MI, Laura (Van Werden) Hughes (Roger) of Robbinsville, NJ and Paul Van Werden (Diane) of Valley, NE; grandchildren, Kyle (currently serving with the USAF stationed in Ramstein, Germany), Nathan and Emily Van Werden, all of Valley, NE, Tyler and Alyssa Van Werden, both of Petoskey, MI and Maddison Hughes of Robbinsville, NJ; brothers, Lawrence Van Werden (Dottie) of Osceola and James Van Werden (Sue) of Adel; a sister, Gretchen (Van Werden) Otto (Nelson) of Minnetonka, MN; an uncle, Bill Parish (McGee) of Moscow, ID and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill was a U.S Army veteran and a member of the American Legion and Sowers Club. He enjoyed fishing in Minnesota and building model trains and airplanes. Bill was an avid football fan of Princeton, Nebraska and the University of Iowa and was the ultimate handyman. He especially loved Christmas shopping for his family and cherished the time he spent with them. Bill died Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. He was 74. Visitation: 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, with family present from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. December 30, 2007 at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset, Iowa. Service: 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2007 at First United Methodist Church in Winterset, Iowa. Memorial: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Madonna Rehabilitation Center Foundation (5401 South St., Lincoln, NE 68506) or the Capital Humane Society (2320 Park Blvd., Lincoln, NE 68502).
